And another thing about that Election ……

  1. Nicola Sturgeon said that a vote for the SNP would lock David Cameron out of Downing Street. David Cameron was back in Downing Street the morning after the election.
  2. Nicola Sturgeon said that a vote for the SNP would give Scotland a strong voice at Westminster. In the last coalition Government, Scotland had 2 MPs in the Cabinet with others holding ministerial positions. Today, Scotland has just one MP in a Government post. This is the lowest figure for over 50 years (there were more Scots MPs in each of the Brown/Blair Governments, the Major/Thatcher Governments, the Callaghan/Wilson Governments and the Heath Government).
  3. In the first weekend after the General Election, David Cameron began the process of appointing his new Cabinet. Nicola Sturgeon organised a photo shoot with her new MPs at the Forth Bridge.
  4. Nicola Sturgeon said she would not work with a Tory Government. The day after the General election she confirmed that she and David Cameron have arranged to meet.
  5. In the Independence referendum in 2014, the YES campaign received 1,617,989 votes. In the General Election in 2015, the SNP received 1,454,436 votes.
  6. The SNP won 56 out of 59 seats in Scotland with less than 50% of the vote (49.98%).
  7. The SNP has 56 MPs out of 650. With less than 10% of the seats in the Commons, the SNP is unable to pass any legislation, unable to hold a majority on any Parliamentary committee and unable to defeat any Government vote.
  8. The powerless SNP MPs will collect annual salaries amounting to nearly £4 million and claim annual expenses of around £2 million. This will amount to some £30 million over the period of the Parliament.
  9. Nicola Sturgeon said that a vote for the SNP would be a vote to end austerity. The Tory Government is now going to press ahead with £12 billion welfare cuts as part of a programme of further public spending cuts to 2017/18.
  10. Nicola Sturgeon said that a vote for the SNP would be a vote to stop Trident. The Tory Government is now going to agree the Trident renewal programme.
  11. Of the 56 SNP MPs, nearly 50 have no experience of holding national political office and some have been SNP members for less than 12 months.
  12. Nicola Sturgeon said the SNP would give Labour a backbone in Government. Instead, there is no Labour government after the SNP removed Labour’s heart by gaining 40 seats in Scotland and dispossessing Labour of even more seats in England after scaremongering about a SNP/Labour deal.
  13. After the referendum in 2014, many nationalists sought to explain the result by talking about missing ballots and state interference. Following the huge and unprecedented swing from SNP to Labour in 2015, there has been a deafening silence.
  14. Nicola Sturgeon has called for an end to austerity but is in no rush to take on Full Fiscal Autonomy whereby she would have to meet the cost.  Although she planned to create an independent Scotland in 18 months, she says that FFA will take “several years” to implement.
